Mary Beth Shirk

Mary Beth Shirk, PharmD, RPh, FCCP, BCPS Dr Shirk is an Emergency Medicine Pharmacist (EMP) at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Clinical Associate Professor at The College of Pharmacy (COP). She received her BS (Ohio Northern, 1984), and PharmD (Ohio State, 1991), and completed a Drug Information fellowship (1993). She has been active in the EMED PRN since it was established (2008), serving as Secretary/Treasurer (2010-11), Chair-elect (2012-13), and Chair (2013-14). Mary Beth founded the CODE Committee (2010), established to partner EMPs and foster idea sharing and professional growth and served as its chair for two years. Mary Beth established MICU (1996-2006) and Emergency Department (2006-present) practice sites. She facilitated development of medical center wide and ED specific protocols and policies, including DKA management, an SSTI Treatment Algorithm, standardized electronic medication ordering, RSI kits, and participation of pharmacy interns in gathering medication histories. Her self-initiated manner, ability to identify opportunities, and desire to implement services to advance pharmacy practice would benefit the EMED PRN’s development and growth. Dr. Shirk has precepted PharmD students and PGY-1/PGY-2 residents since 1984. In 2011 she developed an EM Course at OSU’s COP and lectures at OSU College of Medicine and professional meetings (regionally and nationally). Her publications include peer reviewed and invited articles, book chapters, and posters nationally and internationally. She served as a subcommittee chair of the CPP Section of SCCM and member of several local quality committees.
